A Great Day on the Tablelands

Atherton  The Tastes of the Tableland Festival in Atherton on the 18th October 2009 will be an event not to be missed. This event will showcase the best wines, coffees, cheeses, chocolates and other local produce that this wonderful region produces.

This festival will also be a great opportunity to sample and purchase some of the varied and unique products that are produced on the Tablelands.

If you want to while away a few hours on a lazy Sunday afternoon come and enjoy the entertainment provided for the day.

Enjoy lunch (which you can purchase from the varied menus provided from our local eateries and clubs) and sit at a table under the marquees or relax on a hay bale under the shady trees with a glass or two of our local wine. The site is licensed.

As well as fashions on the stage we will be hoping to see wonderful fashions on those that attend as there will be prizes for best fashions of the day. There will also be activities for the children so it will be great day for the whole family.

 Last week Belinda Down (DEEDI) and I visited Fine Food Australia & Hotel Australia at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre.   The exhibition was full of ideas, new trends and great samples of packaging and labelling.

Tropical Kitchens

miguel ‘Tropical Kitchens’ – A 13 episode television program was filmed recently in the region featuring Spanish celebrity chef Miguel Maestre and showcasing the Tropical North Queenslands exotic food produce.

After previous filming of part of the cooking show Boys’ Weekend with Masterchef Australia’s Gary Mehigan, Miguel fell in love with Cairns and decided to come back to film Tropical Kitchens.

Tropical fruit, vegetable, seafood bought from Rusty’s Markets, the Edge Greengrocer and other regional suppliers made up the ingredients for 39 recipes chosen by Miguel.

Filming was done at the Esplanade Lagoon, the Botanic Gardens, the Cairns Amateurs, Palm Cove, Port Douglas, the Daintree, the Great Barrier Reef, Green Island, the Tableland, Mission Beach and Paronella Park.

New guides to help small to medium businesses with workplace law

The Fair Work Ombudsman has developed a set of guidelines for small to medium sized businesses aimed at assisting employers to better understand aspects of workplace laws.

The benefits of family-friendly workplaces, gender pay equity and good faith bargaining are among the issues canvassed in the series of guidelines that can be accessed on the Fair Work Ombudsman website.

 Eleven best practice guides have been developed to assist employers make better use of the provisions of the Fair Work Act and better understand other aspects of workplace laws.

Executive director Michael Campbell says the guides will particularly benefit employers with limited workplace relations or human resource management experience.

“With this latest initiative, we have sought to explain in simple language the concepts of best practice in key areas which can promote harmonious, productive and co-operative workplaces,” Campbell said.

The new guides cover Work & Family, Consultation & Co-operation, Individual Flexibility Arrangements, Employing Young Workers, Gender Pay Equity, Small Business, Workplace Privacy, Managing Under-performance, Effective Dispute Resolution and Improving Workplace Productivity in Bargaining.

A guide for young workers has also been prepared, outlining things young people need to know before they start work and after they take a job, including protections against harassment and discrimination and the right to join or not to join a union.

The information can be accessed at the Fair Work Ombudsman website at fwo.gov.au . Employers can also contact the Infoline on 13 13 94 between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday for assistance.

Cutting the Red Tape in Small Businesses

Parliamentary Secretary for Employment and Economic Development, Jan Jarratt MP, has kindly agreed to attend this workshop.  Come and have your say!  If you aren’t able to attend, could you please still send through your issues and concerns and suggested solutions.

Phone Lines Now Open For Free Small Business Support

phoneA free service offering small business advice and support over the phone has been officially launched by Small Business Minister Dr Craig Emerson.  The Small Business Support Line and information service is dedicated to assisting small businesses. Advisors will be able to provide information, assistance and referral on small business issues. 

In addition to this service, the Support Line is responsible for the Small Business Credit Complaints Clearing House which provides an avenue for small business to direct their issues about access to and the cost of bank finance.

A Time for Restaurant Awards

This is a good time to dine around Australia.  It’s the time of year when restaurants are being judged under numerous awards. 

The Restaurant & Caterers Queensland Awards held in July for all regions and Brisbane awards in August, came together this week in Brisbane for the state  2009 Restaurant & Catering QLD HOST PLUS Awards For Excellence.

The Australian Gourmet Traveller 2010 Restaurant Guide Awards was held last week and will print their guide to be attached to the October edition.

Then there is the Sydney Morning Herald’s 25th annual Good Food Guide Awards and The Age Good Food Guide Awards for Melbourne. 

The Lifestyle Channel ‘I Love Food’ awards and coming up is Delicious Taste Best Cafe Awards.

For Chef’s it has been the Nestle Golden Hat Award and the Electrolux Appetite for Excellence Young Chef of the Year award.
